Moving homes is an exciting time and with a little bit of know-how, the process can be streamlined to minimise stress. If you pack up your home in such a way that it is ready to be unpacked upon arrival at your new place, you will save yourself lots of effort and have plenty of time to spare which can be used to get settled into your new home. Firstly, do not procrastinate; pack in good time so that the process is as painless as possible.
Declutter and minimise
Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter your space and throw or give away anything you no longer need or use. There is no point in filling your moving truck or container with things that you will end up throwing away when you unpack in your new home. If it had no place in your current home, it won’t belong in the new one either.
Pack by rooms
When you go to view your new home, take note of the space available in each room. And then when you pack your things, mark the boxes according to what is inside them and what their designated destination is.
Make use of categories for ease of packing and unpacking. For example, pack books that you want to go in the study in one box and books set to go in the bedroom in another. This way you know exactly what is in every box and where it needs to go.
Keep track of which items are going into each box and number boxes so when you arrive at your new home you know which to unpack first.
You can save space by packing breakables with blankets so they are protected; cumbersome bedding, for instance, will serve a useful purpose and won’t seem to take up so much space. Use your storage bins and laundry baskets as moving vessels to save even more space.
Once you arrive at your new home, unload boxes that are from or going to the same room, together.
Take picture of the space you are moving into to visualise beforehand where you will place items. Take pictures of the way your electronics are connected so that you can simply repeat the process in the image – this will save you the hassle of doing it from scratch (or from inevitably doing it incorrectly!)
Make moving a pleasant experience by starting fresh with no clutter, a defined plan and of course creating a beautiful new home!
