Going away on holiday is an amazing experience, meant to help you relax and unwind from the stress of work and home. But, for many of us, the safety of our homes and belongings while we are away is a major source of stress. Fear not! JNK Properties has a few interesting safety tips you may not be aware of.
Lock it up!
Fairly obvious, yes, but this basic principle of safety is one of the most commonly forgotten methods. You need to make sure that absolutely everything that could be used as an entryway is locked up and closed properly. Doors, windows, and even cat/dog flaps need to be properly secured to deter would-be intruders.
If you have pets and cannot leave them locked inside or outside of the house, consider investing in an access-controlled flap. Most pets today are microchipped – a very good idea, if you haven’t done it yet. You can have a flap installed which has a chip reader built in, which you can set to only unlock the flap when it reads your pet’s chip. This is also a great way to keep strange animals (or uninvited guests) out of your home.
Let there be light
One of the most obvious signs that somebody is home is when lights are switched on and off. On the other hand, if lights are permanently left on or there are no lights coming on at all, that’s a dead giveaway that the owners are away. An age-old trick to bypass this particular threat is to buy a few timer switches and set them for different times and plug some lamps into them. Now, those timers will switch those lamps on and off at the times you have set, making it look as though somebody is actually busy inside your home.
Make friends with the neighbours
Your neighbours, if they are staying home for the holidays, will be the first ones to respond to anything that happens at your home. If you are on good, friendly terms with your neighbours you can be sure that they are more likely to look out for you while you are away. They will be far more willing to pick up your post for you so that it doesn’t build up – another giveaway that the owners are away – and perhaps even pull their cars into your driveway and ‘visit’ for a while every now and again. They are there, and they can help to make it appear as if you are too. So be a good neighbour.
Of course, before all this you need to make sure you have the best and safest home possible. Contact JNK Properties to help you find the perfect home to enjoy in and out of the holiday season.
